The Marine Discovery Center runs boat tours that explore the Indian River Lagoon and its mangrove forests. Because the waterways are sheltered from the open sea, dolphins and manatees breed here with few predators. On our tour we saw dolphins within minutes. Pelicans and other birds were everywhere. The boat moves slowly through the mangroves, and the guide explains the local ecosystem. It is suitable for kids; we brought our one-year-old. If you want a closer look at the water, you can also rent a kayak and paddle through the same channels.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is about an hour south of New Smyrna Beach. When a SpaceX rocket launches, you can see it clearly from the shoreline. Rocket launches happen regularly, so check the schedule before you arrive. I went down to the beach about 20 minutes before the launch time and streamed the exact moment on my phone. A bright orange blaze appeared, and the rocket accelerated upward. The entire event took roughly 4 minutes. It was a highlight of my trip.

The Hub on Canal is a creative space where local artists rent rooms to display their work. You can walk through and see paintings, photography, and mixed media. Two other spots worth visiting are Jane's Arts Center and Arts on Douglas, both of which specialize in ceramics and sculptures. Jane's has a garden out back, and you can peek into the artists' workspaces. Street art is scattered along Canal Street and Flagler Avenue, with large murals of sharks and pelicans on building sides. The shops here - LuSea Boutique, Posh Pineapple, Pink Flamingo at Petals - are as colorful as the art.
Cross the river from Flagler Avenue
Canal Street is a 5-minute drive from Flagler Avenue over the North Causeway. Parking is easy along the street.
